South Middleback Ranges
Since BGC Contracting took over operations at South Middleback Ranges, they have seen 30% increase in overall productivity levels at the site.
The Middleback Ranges have been the site of continuous iron ore mining for more than 100 years, playing a key role in the development of the nearby region. This has continued in recent years, with the operations pivotal in the creation of Arrium Mining.
MINING SERVICES CONTRACT
In 2012, BGC Contracting was awarded the contract to provide mining services for Arrium Mining at the South Middleback Ranges iron ore project.
The South Middleback Ranges are located 60km North West of Whyalla, approximately 600 personnel are onsite and all are residential. The scope of work includes drilling, blasting, load and haul, crusher feed and train loading. BGC Contracting moves 15 million BCM of material annually.
The site produces two iron ore products: magnetite and hematite. The magnetite is processed on site and sent to Whyalla, where is it then pelletised and used as feedstock at the Whyalla Steelworks. The hematite ore mined, up to 6Mtpa, is sold to international markets.
Also worth noting is that since BGC Contracting took over operations at South Middleback Ranges, they have seen 30% increase in overall productivity levels at the site.
BGC's successful operations at South Middleback Ranges led Arrium to award BGC another contract in South Australia in early 2014, this time to reopen and conduct mining at the historic Iron Knob iron ore mine also located near Whyalla.
In 2017 BGC Contracting we awarded a new five-year contract is valued at more than $720 million and due to conclude in 2022.
