Great Northern Highway Kimberly ECI Project

The Great Northern Highway Kimberley Project was Australia’s first ever Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) contract. The highway has a length of almost 3,200 kilometres and is the longest highway in Australia. The highway is constructed as a sealed, predominantly two-lane single carriageway, but with some single lane bridges in the Kimberley.

The highway has a length of almost 3,200 kilometres and is the longest highway in Australia.

BGC Contracting was awarded the $105 million contract with Main Roads WA, Laing O’Rourke and AECOM (named Team Savannah) for road and bridge constructions running between Halls Creek and Kununurra in Western Australia.

The project involved the design development and construction of 3 bridges and over 25km of road realignment of the Great Northern Highway over a 200km distance. The work was completed in a 2 stage process, requiring a relationship focus between client, designer and constructor to deliver the project with innovation and collaborative construction planning. The first stage also included early site works and procurement of critical items required to reduce delays and maximise best-for-project outcomes.

BGC was also involved in the preservation of a 750 year old 37 tonne boab tree, which was successfully relocated to Kings Park in Perth.

Key benefits of the ECI approach were early mobilisation and construction of site facilities in a geographically isolated area of Western Australia so that a key bridge could be constructed in a tight timeframe prior to the following wet season. The ECI team developed strong relationships with the local indigenous communities that resulted in local employment, training, and business development, as well as provide lasting legacies.

The team successfully delivered the project with a zero LTI safety record. The project was awarded a high commendation by Engineers Australia in the category of Engineering for Regional Communities at the annual 2010 Engineering Excellence Awards.

Apart from the Great Northern Highway project, the Northam Bypass project, Term Asset contract one and Term Network contracts one and two are further demonstrations of successful scopes of work that BGC Contracting have been awarded with Main Roads WA.
